I have to admit, I didn't buy this through Amazon. I got an email from another website offering a twofer deal. But I figured I'd review it here so no one is surprised or disappointed by what they get. First this is a full manual fixed aperture mirror lens. By full manual, I mean no auto exposure, no auto focus, no aperture ring lens. I have used this on 4 different Nikon bodies, the 40,60,90 and 700 and have had some success with it. It seems to me this is more like an F8 lens than a F6.3, adding the tele-converter adds about a full stop to about f16. This makes it a good outdoor daylight lens only. I tried a few night shots with bulb exposures running out to 2-3 minutes, not real pretty. Lens flare is nasty with the light source near the edge of frame or in frame. This is not a lens for fast action, low light or for the once in a lifetime shot. Chromatic aberration is present and varies in severity from almost none to nasty with the direction of light and harshness of the light. Now that I have finished ripping, the lens does have it's uses. Moon shots are great with or without the converter. Not great for birding, but I did get a few good shots of bald eagles nesting with it from about 1000 feet away. I loaned it out to a friend that got some great shots of squirrels trying to get food out of his feeder at 250 from the house. My sample also came with three filters (ND2 - ND4 - Skylight) It's not a bad training tool for learning manual exposure techniques.Pros:
Cheap super telephoto - 750/1500mm on dx - tripod needed
Small size and weight for focal length
Simple to use if you know how to drive your camera
Cons:
No auto exposure - you will need to ride your ISO and shutter speed
Hard to tame CA in harsh light
Fast moving action hard to catch with the manual adjustments.
Would I recommend it, Yes but not for point and shooters. It has it's uses, but you must be aware of it's limitations and know how to drive your camera to get good shots.
