Audiofly 78 Series Headset with Microphone, Marque Black Review

OK, so I wanted to really give these headphones a good listening before writing this review because these are some of the only dynamic driver + armature headphones on the market, which is a concept I've always been a fan of. Right now i'm at about 90 hours of burn-in, and the sound on the headphones is really starting to open up.

Packaging/Accessories:

The package itself is top quality, fabric box with a high quality Y splitters and airplane adapters. It also comes with a small carry case that I found to be almost unusable unless you wrap your headphones very very tightly, which isn't great for the cabling.

The earphones ship with five different silicone ear buds, and two sets of comply foam ear plugs. I prefer the comply as it gets a better sound seal.
These don't totally block out surrounding noise, but they do a good enough job of it so that I can enjoy music at a comfortable level.

Packaging and accessories are 5 stars easily.

Build Quality and Appearance:

The Positive:

These are some of the most gorgeous headphone's (in my opinion) that I've owned. The design is unique, but subtle and refined. The ear bud's themselves are a little larger than normal, on account of the dual dynamic/in ear armature, but they fit comfortable in both mine and my girlfriend's ears (she's tiny).

The cabling and stress relief points are extremely solid. The cable is a thick, braided cable with Kevlar reinforcements and a cordura outer shell. The fabric on the outer shell started to fray slightly near the base, but it's purely cosmetic.

The microphone and call answer buttons are both very sturdy, and wrapped in an attractive aluminum.

The (big) Negative:

Now, the actual headphone jack has had some problems. The jack itself has a metal sheath around the outside of it with the audio fly logo. This fell off this morning. This might be on account of the glue breaking down from repeatedly switching from outside (20 deg F) to my house (70 deg F), but it doesn't matter, it shouldn't happen with a pair of $200 headphones.
As far as affecting performance, It isn't a huge deal, the metal sheath just covers a plastic housing, so you can glue it back on, but this is something i expect to do after having headphones for 3 years, not 6 days.

Appearance: 5/5 stars.
Build Quality 3/5 stars.

Now for the important part,

Audio Quality:

Microphonics (cable noise). The fabric cables do a good job of eliminating cable noise, but they aren't perfect. After a few days the cable has lost some of it's packed stiffness and unless I brush up against something I don't head them.

Soundstage: Good but not mind blowing. The width is beyond your ears, but just barely.

Bass: The bass is delivered by the dynamic driver in the AF78, and it does a fantastic job of it. It's got punch without being muddy or baffled. That said, while sounds get an added sense of depth, the bass is relatively balanced (which is great for me) and never overwhelming. If you're looking for something to vibrate your skull, look elsewhere.

Midrange: The mids are also handled by the dynamic driver. They're slightly above average at best. The lower mids tend to blend into the bass, and the highest mids have a large decay. Nothing here really pops though, it sounds good (very good as a matter of fact) but there's no WOW factor.

Treble:
The treble is produced by the AF78's armature, and this is where it really shines. The highs are beautiful, crisp, and transparent. The detail here is amazing for a $200 headphone. There is no sibilance or harshness, but the performance of the treble relative to the bass and mids can be a bit of a shocking transition, you go from mediocrity to beautiful clarity in the span of a few seconds.

Instrument Separation: It's a little odd, on account of the crossover used with moderate blending on the mid lows-low mids and excellent clarity on the high mids-treble.

Microphone: Great, not fantastic (exactly what I expect from all headphone-mics) My friends said that it sounded like I was on a speakerphone. It should be noted that there is no wind barrier here, if you're talking outside in the wind people won't be able to understand a word you're saying.
Audioquality: 3.5-4/5

Overall: These are audiofly's first entrance into the midrange headphone market, so I'm willing to cut them some slack on the technical issues I mention above. The headphone are better than average, I'd even call them great, but they provide a relatively tame listening experience. Music sounds very very good, but there really is no "Wow" factor. For what I spent (~100), they are top of the range and I would buy them again.

For the list price, however, they have some fierce competition. You wouldn't regret the purchase, but there might be better options depending on your preferences
One more giant plus: These have a 5 year warranty. That's the best on the market for anything in this price range.
