A softbox reduces the harsh shadows you get from head-on direct flash, and it gives more natural lighting than bouncing the flash off the ceiling. This is an excellent small softbox that allows you to use the flash hand-held or for mounted on a light stand or tripod. It does wonders for flash-lit or flash-filled portraits, for lighting small subjects and for macro work.

Read the well-illustrated instructions before you set it up, because it's not intuitive. The softbox comes with a bracket that connects your flash to the softbox. It's designed so you can hand-hold the flash or mount the bracket to a standard tripod screw (1/4 x 20) and use a tripod or lightstand. The bracket is barely passable -- it's just one step above a piece of junk. The parts are not smoothly finished, but most important, the fitting that holds the flash shoe is not capable of securely holding a modestly heavy flash like Canon 580EX-II or even a 430EX. And if you over-tighten it you risk damaging the shoe. (It might be OK with a lighter flash.)

That's a serious flaw, but fortunately the fitting for holding the flash is tapped for a standard tripod screw. So you can buy a 2" long 1/4 x 20 fully threaded bolt or thumbscrew, thread it through the fitting and then it up into the thread of an accessory flash shoe, or into the threaded shoe of an off-camera extension cord like the Canon OC-2 or OC-3. (I expect that Nikon offers the same kind of off-camera extension cable, and you can definitely buy accessory shoes for a few of dollars that have a thread in them for mounting a flash on a tripod.) You may need a drop of light oil on the threaded bolt or thumbscrew to make it work smoothly in the poorly machined threads of the fitting.

I've given it 3 stars despite these complaints because the softbox itself is well made and works beautifully, even though the bracket is a POS that requires a workaround. The softbox is available without the bracket from other vendors, but you do need it, so wherever you buy it, buy the kit. Once you attach it to the flash securely, the sotfbox gives you photographic results that are very pleasing.
