From testing several different video cameras, I decided that this one was the best model for the price for the picture quality. I liked the Samsung that has a zoom lens system in a flat-style camcorder, but the video just wasn't as good. This one rivals the Bloggie HD in that its video resolution is higher than HD 1920 by 1080, but the pixel map is set to 1920 x 1440, which was designed to be backward compatible with DVD formats and standard aspect TVs. The actual video is widescreen, and the image is more than 1920 x 1080. You can tell this by using a zoom function when playing the video back on a Western Digital player or an Envizen Noah player. You get about double the zoom that you get with the bloggie HD.The color is excellent, the interface is a little cumbersome, but not horribly difficult. It has settings for auto or manual white balance, which is great for outdoor stuff. It is not the top of the line model, and the biggest problem it has is that the focus is not very good at low light levels. Night video on this unit is one of the best in its price range, and is not artificial. It gets dark and it is dark. At dusk, it still has full color, something that many other cameras have a problem with. Most of Sanyo's video camera line have this feature, and sometimes I think it even rivals the brand names. This review applies to the VPC-100 only.
The color depth is its best feature, although it does exhibit some red clipping when filming red Tulips on a green background. The video has very good contrast, and is not artificial looking, although you can create "kodachrome" by using the vivid setting, which simply increases the color level. (no offense to Kodak, but it blows away the Kodak water proof HD camera that I tested) It encodes in Mpeg 4, at about 8-9 meg per second, but does it really well, compared to some of the higher priced camcorders at a much higher bit rate. (The bloggie HD was the runner up and would be my next choice)
I was really supprised at how well the video came out. It does have issues with pixelation when filming windy trees, something that is a problem that HD lossy video has in general. You need analog video or real film to shoot that! Its problems are NOT DIFFERENT from others I have tested, and this seems to be a issue with most mp4 based HD camcorders, the format itself and not the camera or imaging. An increased bitrate would improve this a little, but when they designed these, there were no high speed SD cards that could go to 20 meg/s.
If you are looking for a video camera that you can shoot pretty good "still" photos from the VIDEO, then this is your best bet. Beware, that if you plan to edit video, you will need a video editor like Video Pad that can handle the weird aspect ratio. The video does not loose quality when stretching back to 16:9.
Again, this was in design for over 10 years, so when they started on it, we all had 4:3 tube sets and DVD players. The thought was that HD-DVD would use the stretch function and a pixel aspect ratio of 4:3. Unfortunately, they went with 16:9 and the DVD is now Blu Ray. The imaging technology was WAY ahead of it's time.
It's a little better than television, in fact I would say that if you were looking to make an amature movie (at 30 fps), use this!
