National Geographic Earth Explorer Backpack, Small (NG 5158) Review

I have this bag in the "old" medium style (it's been redesigned), so I bought this small one as an addition. The bag is well made and durable, and as you can see from the specs, the bag itself is not heavy, but neither is it light! As with all of Nat Geo's backpack style camera bags, the bag is divided into an upper and lower compartment. The divider is nicely padded, and can be unzipped (but not removed) to create a single large space. When you do this, you lose the dividers in the lower compartment because there's nothing at the top for them to velcro to. The netbook pouch is accessible from the inside of the bag, and also via a zipper at the back of the bag. The entire bag is nicely padded, and I like that it doesn't scream "expensive camera gear inside."

The lower compartment, for your camera gear, is small, but when packed efficiently, will hold a fair amount of gear. I packed it with my Canon 50D with 100mm prime attached. It's positioned as it is in the photo here, and it's a snug fit. It requires a bit of wiggling to slide it in. I have my EF 28-135 (f/3.5-5.6) stashed to the right (as depicted here also). Nothing longer will fit in that position. To fit something longer you'd have to lay the lens against the back of the backpack. To the other side of the camera, the space can either be divided into two small compartments, or one long compartment, depending on what you want to use the space for. I imagine you could fit even more gear in the space if you pack lenses and body separately. The dividers are not super customizable as there is only one velcro strip on each side (see photo).

There are a myriad of small pockets for stashing filters, batteries, and whatever else you might need. The upper compartment is a decent size as well for stashing anything else you might need for the day. Another plus is that if you have (or buy) the matching camera strap, there are two metal loops on the backpack straps so that when you're wearing the pack, you can attach your camera with metal clips and the weight of your camera is no longer on your neck.

Overall, I'm really happy with the bag. I was looking for something small to hold my essentials and this fits the bill. Don't expect something this small to hold everything in your camera arsenal though. Likewise, if you buy one of the larger packs and load it up with every piece of gear you own (which is possible if you're organized), don't be surprised if it's heavy. I've seen lots of reviews on different sites for the different backpacks where the user complains that the pack is heavy, and then lists everything they crammed into it - no wonder it was heavy! This will hold your body and three or four lenses (depending on which lenses you choose and whether you have them attached to the body). For me, body with lens attached, and two other lenses stashed in the compartments. My other accessories are stashed in the little pockets.

Sorry this was so long! Hope someone found it helpful :)
