Nikon Coolpix 8800 8MP Digital Camera with 10x Vibration Reduction Optical Zoom Lens Review

I have owned the Nikon 8800 for two months now and I do love this camera--sharp photos, accurate color, and good ergonomics. Very well-built. This is a very feature-rich camera and I am still trying various features. Mostly I have been taking photos (about 1800 already) in both Program mode and Aperture Priority mode and getting to know the camera.

I don't really have much problem with the auto focusing. I owned the 5700 before this and several other Nikon digitals. While the Nikon uses a contrast-based focusing system, this particular camera has a very effective focus assist light that allows good low light focusing, even in a completely dark room. Focusing in general is very quick, though the camera hunts just a little at full tele. Shutter lag is minimal but this camera is a little slow in writing to card. The use of Quick Response, though, allows you to take immediate shots if you do not need to refocus (though you can recompose) and there are a variety of continuous modes so this is a minimal problem for me in the type of photography I do, even when taking photos of my husband riding his bicycle (Panning with him in focus and background blurred). I take most of my indoor photos near wide angle and I choose to turn off the 9-point area focus system. If this is on, the camera has a smaller area to try to focus in. I tend to use an exposure of a minus 1/3 outdoors and a plus 1/3 indoors.

Outdoors the 10X stabilized lens is fun and the VR stabilization technology works very well.

Photo quality is very high and there is very low noise at ISO 50. I do not usually need to use an antinoise program on my photos unless I use the higher ISOs.

TTL focusing is possible with the SB600 or SB800 external flashes. You can use all the features except the focus assist of these flashes, but you already have a good focus assist light on the camera.

Negatives? I find the placement of the function button awkward, but all the other buttons and dials are very well placed. Also, Nikon is slow in getting accessories available for us. While the Nikon filters are an odd size, most of us have chosen to use a filter adaptor from nextphoto.com which allows the use of generic filters. I find the zooming mechanism a little jerky. And there is a little barrel distortion at wide angle, not a problem in my photos. CA including PF have really not been a problem for me.

I rate this camera very highly!

Polk Audio Monitor 25C Two-Way Center Channel Speaker (Single, Black) Review

Pros: Perfect complement to my Definitive Technology StudioMonitor 450 Speakers (Pair, Black) (Old Version) fronts, Polk Audio AM6095-B Monitor60 Series II Floorstanding Loudspeaker (Black) Each surrounds, and Polk Audio PSW10 10-Inch Monitor Series Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black) sub woofer (so not Timber matched per se, but it sounds very good). This appears to be the recent version of the highly rated Polk Audio AM2185-A CS2 Series II Center Channel Speaker (Black) Each, with the speakers closer to the center than the CS2.

Cons: Big, and the faceplate/logo is not as good as the colorful and full-covered one on CS2.

Other Thoughts: This is a huge box and I was not sure how I was going to house it as I don't have space below the TV and no enclosure above the TV either. I ended up installing a VideoSecu LCD TV Monitor Ceiling Mount Fits Most 23"-37" LCD LED Flat Panel Display with VESA 200/200x100, Fit Flat and Vaulted Ceiling Mount, and Wall Mount ML406AB 1LH on my TV, resting the front end of the 25C on the top rim of the TV using strong mounting tape, and attaching the ceiling plate of the VESA mount to the 25C's bottom (with mounting tape to dampen vibrations). Firmly nested on top of my TV now, even though it looks outrageously bulky on a 46" TV. Ultra slim TVs may not give the luxury of doing this. DISCLAIMER: Doing the above installation *could* void your warranty - please make sure you thoroughly test your speaker (including break in period) and confirm you are going to keep it before attempting such an installation.

Sauder Corner TV Stand Review

We ordered this product from an Amazon partner reseller, it arrived yesterday, and we put it together last night. It's a very nice TV cabinet, and fits exactly into the corner of our living room. All in all, we're really quite delighted.

If you're considering this TV cabinet, you might want to bear a few things in mind:

First, the color in the photo is misleading. The product is much darker than the photo suggests--I would call it "dark walnut". Whatever the name, it is much darker than the photo shows.

Second, be prepared for a heavy box. This is a large piece of furniture, made of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF -- "particle board" to you). Which means that the delivery driver will appear at your door with a very large, very heavy box. If you're taking this up a flight of stairs, be sure to have a friend to help with the lifting.

Third, this is a fairly complicated project. If you have assembled bookcases or computer desks this won't be a big deal--but if you have never done a project like this before, I would not start with this one. While most parts are labeled, and the directions are (for the most part) quite detailed, no furniture kit is perfect: in particular, this kit did not have the drawer glide parts labeled, and the directions did not specify how to orient the drawer glides on the (unlabeled) MDF parts to which they belonged. Some intense study of the diagram solved the problem--but this could have been done much better.

Fourth, go buy some tools. The directions tell you that you need a hammer and a #2 Philips screwdriver. You need more: you'll need both a #1 and a #2 Philips screwdriver, a hammer, and I recommend getting a hard rubber mallet. This is an inexpensive MDF kit--the screws are made cheaply, and strip easily. You will be much happier if you have spent twenty bucks on a pair of really good Philips screwdrivers before you start this project. I also suggest the rubber mallet because there are a couple of places where you have to "persuade" pieces of MDF to fit into grooves--a rubber mallet is less likely to damage the MDF.

Fifth, do this by hand--do NOT reach for your favorite power tools. This is inexpensive MDF, and cheap hardware--it is extremely easy to strip screws or chew up the MDF with just a teensy bit of Heavy Duty Power (grunt, grunt). Reward yourself with two really, really comfortable Philips screwdrivers, as I wrote above, and leave the cordless drill/driver in your tool cupboard.

Sixth, clear off the dining room table, or find some other similar workspace. This project requires a lot of assembly and tightening of screws--it will go much, much easier on your back, knees, and general attitude if you're working at workbench height.

The end result is a very nice project--we're very happy with the results, and think we have an excellent value for the money we paid.

Sony Alpha Circular PL Filter for DSLR Lens Diameter 72mm Review

This Sony circular polarizing filter is designed to fit Sony 72mm lenses, such as the highly acclaimed Sony 16-50mm f/2.8 Standard Zoom Lens. The filter is constructed with high quality glass with the T* Carl Zeiss coating, and finished in Black anodized aluminum. A snap closure plastic case with internal padding is provided. The filter is made in Japan.

Although I own the 62mm version of this circular polarizer, the two are identical, other than the diameter. My own lens on which I use this filter is actually a Zeiss (Sony SAL-1680Z 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T DT Zoom Lens for Sony Alpha Digital SLR Camera), but I nevertheless have use for this circular polarizer at times. The excellent 16-50mm Sony f2.8 lens is not a Zeiss, but does have excellent color already; however, the addition of this filter can add a little of the Zeiss "flavor" to the lens. A circular polarizing filter can greatly reduce reflective light (such as reflections from water and glass), and can also improve color depth and contrast. Like all circular polarizers, you have to practice with how to orient the filter for a given shot (the filter can be rotated while in place to permit the correct adjustment when correcting for glare, but the results can be significant.

This type of filter is a great asset to have when shooting in difficult conditions, including extreme sunlight. You can purchase much less expensive filters, but they won't always be as thin as the better ones, and can introduce some unwanted effects, depending on the specific type lens being used. This one is an easy five star recommendation, with the caveat that it is indeed quite expensive. However, the quality is evident as soon as you start using it.
