Let's face it - I truly wanted a 600mm AF zoom lens that costs $$$$ of American greenbacks, but this was what I could afford. So I cannot hold it against it that I accepted the tradeoffs with full knowledge there would be limitations. All of the well-known limitations of teleconverters apply here and why wouldn't they? Yes, it does not autofocus at the upper range of the f-stop settings for my lenses. However, I use a Sony Alpha DSLR and I can drop into manual focus mode very readily, as well as bump the ISO and turn on the noise reduction to boot. So going to an f-stop of 11 or higher does not cause me to lose sleep. True, the loss of depth of field is at times a little annoying, but I expected that.

The quality of the build is very high and I have nothing to say there except it was a pleasure to find it as expected. I don't know if the 7 elements make an appreciable difference over the models with 4 elements, but that seems likely, and heck, the price difference between the two was so small that I justified jumping up a bit.

I would not buy this if you expect to use it for action shots, as the manual focus limitations could make it very challenging. However, if you are shooting wildlife, nature scenes, anything outdoors with good light, then it will provide acceptable levels of performance and user satisfaction. I find that the bokeh is good, with a little chromatic aberration - nothing extraordinarily good or bad on either front. I don't make my living with my camera, and as a rank amateur I don't get overly excited by these things anyway.

So for what it is - an affordable utilitarian addition to my kit I am okay with it. Someday I may have the greenbacks to buy what I truly want, but for now this will have to do!
