The Commlite is an adapter for using Canon mount lenses on Sony Nex camera bodies while retaining autofocus, image stabilization and aperture control. The adaptor succeeds at least in part in making your Canon mount lenses work with your Sony Nex.It arrived 15 days after ordering from China.
Note you must attach the adapter to the lens, then mount the adapter to the camera. The camera should be switched off when changing lenses and switching Auto-manual focus and Image Stabilization On/Off.
Autofocus: This ability seems to vary with which lens is attached. Seems to work better with wide angles than normal or teles, but it does not work anywhere as well as either native lenses attached to their respective cameras. It hunts back and forth, and sometimes will settle on the correct focus, but other times will stop on a complete blur. Also I have had various lenses "lock up" the camera and you have to power it off and restart. Remember to switch off the camera before changing from Auto Focus to Manual Focus. I had excellent results when using manual focus. The Canon 15mm fisheye, mostly does not work and only occasionally allows the camera to start. A Tokina 10-17mm works for one shot or two and then locks up the camera. Other lenses work pretty well and even get the focus confirmation beep and green focus squares. Even the best working ones take several seconds or more to lock focus, as the camera "hunts" back and forth.
Image Stabilization: Works on the few lenses I have tried.
Aperture: Works (unless lens locks up camera body). This is the reason for owning this adapter. The only other way to use Canon lenses with the inexpensive adapters is to either shoot them wide open, or preset an aperture while the lens is on a Canon body, and then remove it without turning off the camera. This results in the lens keeping whatever f/stop was set. To change, it you must repeat the procedure. Not very convenient! The Commlite adapter lets the Sony sense, report and change the f/stop just like a Sony lens.
Build Quality: Seems very solid and well made. Canon connection fits perfect without looseness or play. The Sony connector fits smoothly but has maybe millimeter of rotational looseness that I notice when turning the lens focus or zoom. Doesn't seem to affect connection or picture quality. No other looseness, just the slight rotation. The tripod mount can be easily removed from the adaptor for hand-holding lenses.
Conclusion: Other adapters offer similar (maybe superior) functions but at a much higher price point, not justifiable for my purposes. For the price of this adaptor, the ability to adjust the f/stops is extremely useful and makes using most Canon EF and EF-S lenses more convenient. The inability to autofocus quickly and accurately means you will likely just shoot in manual focus. The NEX has some great features (magnify and focus peaking) that make manual focus a breeze, so not a deal breaker for me. Ideally, you probably should have all native e-mount Sony lenses for ease of use, but the Commlite adapter allows you to use most of the Canon lenses you already own. It's not always perfect, but still worth having.
