The Ultra tripods additionally features the unique, Patented Velbon "Twist Lock" leg system - a simple quick twist and pull allows you to extend each leg in on movement. Another twist locks the leg. The legs of most tripods are joined to the head via bolts through the top of each leg, however the Ultra MAXi incorporates non-piercing bolts: (i.e. each leg extends the entire inside length of the outer leg casing), making the tripod extremely compact when folded. I have spent many hours searching the web for a (close to) full-size tripod that would fold to something you can actually put in a daypack and take with you on a hike, so believe me, a product like this Velbon is hard to come by! Many full-size tripods will fold to 50cm/20", a few will to 47cm/18.5", but 36cm/14" like this tripod is really quite unique!

Yes, compromises had to be made; the legs do flex a little (the lowest section has a diameter of just 9mm (11/32")), but it is still a well put together product. However, if you think you will need something more sturdy, look at its larger brother Velbon Ultra LUXi-L Aluminum Tripod with Quick Release PHD-1Q Panhead, Maximum Height 63", Supports 5.5 lb, which has thicker legs and is also 9cm/3.5" taller when fully extended, but is also a little longer when folded and more than a little heavier. There are also slightly shorter, "M" versions of either the MAXi or the LUXi, but I wouldn't consider them unless they were seriously cheaper than the "L"s, which, as I type this, they are not (or unless you are short enough not to need the longer versions).

I'm taking one star off for the following reasons:

- The camera screw in the quick-release plate is too small to tighten with your fingers; you need a screwdriver or at least a coin. Velbon supplies a cheesy metal plate on a piece of rope for tightening and I can't help thinking that a company that managed to design such a fine product could have designed a better screw, or at least nicely integrate the tightening plate into the head.

- The maximum load for this tripod that you can find on the web (including Velbon's own website) is 2kg/4.4lbs, yet on the box itself, and on the one-page leaflet inside (I refuse to call it a manual; that would be giving it way too much credit) it says 1.5kg/3.3lbs (and 2kg/4.4lbs for the LUXi models, BTW). Which one is it then?!
